I really enjoyed ProductCamp Unconference 2023. It was held downtown Dallas in a revitalized West End building called Factory Six 03. I remember when this was a popular nightlight district with bars, restaurants, and clubs. Now it's that, but more, with apartments, office space, and a local park. It's a really interesting evolution to the area!
I was glad to pitch a talk that was on my mind for weeks. It's called Generative AI: Framing Your Perspective. Download the presentation PDF.
We're lucky ProductCamp organizers took on the hard work to organize this event. Awesome location, cool audience, super-modern themes. I learned a lot from everyone I chatted with, and the amazing session leaders.
Product Managers, for me, are a key part of building modern digital offerings. Apps, websites, services, development teams, all benefit someone dedicated to figuring out how to build something people want. As a computer programmer, I'm so ultra focused on doing the hard work of building, delivering, and operating software at scale, I'm glad to have a diligent partner who represents the customer.
My goal for this talk from the very start was serving an audience of curious, future-looking professionals, who know they want to quickly catch up with AI. It seems like everyone has it on their never ending to-do list, but there's never enough time!
There's enough covered in my deck/talk to help you gain context, and start building up your perspective on the utterly transformative technology of AI. Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), data science, and statistical analysis have been around for a long time. GenAI is now having a strong cultural moment, clear leaders are emerging, but it's still early.
The good news is that today is the right time to start thinking about GenAI! Establish your approach to it as you apply it at work, and life.
I've talked to a number of people this year. I'll ask them, "Hey, how's it going? So, Generative AI, what do you think about it? How are you using it? What's your perspective?"
Most of them, if they don't immediately walk away, will look wistfully up for a moment, and then reply, "I'm not exactly sure yet."
That's totally fair. Generative AI is a rapidly moving technology with a deep past. For some it's intimidating getting started, catching up with the deep thinkers, and others don't even know where to get started. It's not even on the radar for plenty of people because of other priorities.
You'll see in the associated presentation deck .PDF that I'm putting edges around the map of the AI landscape. I want to circle landmarks visiting major concerns I heard from people like you. We'll visit waypoints in our journey reviewing:
